A certified Birth Doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; and who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. She provides assistance with non-medical aspects of care. DONA International certification ensures that a doula has met a high international standard, ensuring expectant parents and their medical team that she will adhere to the highest standards of conduct and ethics.
Having a Birth Doula by your side can enhance your birth experience for you and your partner through guided comfort measures, relaxation techniques, massage and the use of visualization.
Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.
You will meet your Birth Doula at an in-home interview to discuss your birth plan. Your doula will work together with your labor partner to provide you the support needed during the different stages of labor and birth. She will be with you during your early labor at home and will remain with you at the hospital until birth. Doulas believe that birth is normal, natural and healthy.
She is also available to provide continued support to you and your baby at home. You may find it helpful to connect with someone who will provide you with ongoing support from pregnancy, labor, birth, recovery and bringing your baby home. This service is best utilized when you connect with your doula during your 5th to 7th month of pregnancy.
